US Introduces Visa Restrictions for Indian Travel Agents Involved in Illegal Immigration
In a significant move, the US State Department announced on Monday that it will impose visa restrictions on Indian travel agency owners and officials found to be knowingly assisting in illegal immigration to the United States. This action is a part of ongoing efforts by the US to address immigration issues.
A spokesperson for the US Embassy mentioned that specific names of the affected individuals or agencies could not be disclosed due to visa confidentiality rules. However, this decision follows the recent deportation of over 300 Indians from the US earlier this year, marking an unusual use of military flights for such operations.
Most of those deported came from Punjab and Gujarat and were reportedly sent to the US using what are referred to as "donkey routes." Many paid substantial amounts, ranging from ₹30 lakh to ₹45 lakh, to travel via complex routes that often included stops in multiple countries.
The US stated that its actions aim to hold accountable those involved in facilitating illegal immigration. This global policy also applies to individuals who might otherwise qualify for the Visa Waiver Program. The goal is to disrupt networks involved in alien smuggling.
The US mission is actively working to identify those engaged in human trafficking and illegal immigration activities. Their immigration policies focus on educating foreign nationals about the risks of illegal immigration and enforcing laws to protect the American public.
Earlier this year, the Indian government expressed its opposition to illegal immigration, linking it to organized crime. It also affirmed its commitment to repatriate Indians who have overstayed their welcome in the US or lack proper documentation. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal hinted at a collaborative approach with the US to resolve these issues.
Estimates suggest there may be around 18,000 illegal Indian immigrants in the US. The US has returned approximately 1,000 of these individuals over the past year, although the process has faced scrutiny, especially after reports of women and children being shackled during deportation.
Industry professionals, such as Ritesh Desai from Ahmedabad, welcomed the US government’s focus on curbing illegal immigration, emphasizing that such measures help uphold the integrity of legitimate student admissions. However, some travel agents express concerns regarding the practical implementation of these restrictions, noting that many involved in illegal practices operate under false identities.
In summary, while the US is taking steps to tackle illegal immigration networks, challenges remain in effectively enforcing these new visa restrictions.
