Visa Launches Intelligent Commerce to Enhance AI Payments

Visa is stepping into the future of shopping and payments with a new initiative designed to harness the power of artificial intelligence. This program, called Visa Intelligent Commerce, was unveiled at the recent Visa Global Product Drop. It aims to make the payment process smoother and more secure by opening Visa’s extensive payment network to developers and tech experts working on AI solutions.

Jack Forestell, Visa’s Chief Product and Strategy Officer, stated that soon, people might use AI agents to browse, select, and purchase items for them. “These agents will need to earn the trust of not just users but also banks and sellers,” he emphasized.

Forestell added that, similar to past evolutions in shopping—from physical stores to online platforms and now mobile apps—Visa is again setting a new standard for commerce. With Intelligent Commerce, AI agents will be able to shop and buy for users based on their chosen preferences, allowing consumers to set limits while Visa manages the details.

Building Trust in AI Commerce

In the near future, many will rely on AI for everything from finding a new sweater to planning vacations or making grocery runs. Visa aims to simplify the payment process, ensuring that transactions in this AI-powered world are secure and trustworthy.

This new initiative builds on Visa’s 30 years of experience using AI and machine learning to tackle fraud and manage risks in payments. Visa is collaborating with major AI players, including companies like IBM, Microsoft, and OpenAI, to offer personalized and secure commerce experiences worldwide.

“We’re partnering with leading AI innovators to encourage participation and develop secure payment methods,” Forestell noted, highlighting the potential of AI to revolutionize commerce and business.

Benefits for Consumers and Developers

Visa Intelligent Commerce is set to change AI commerce from a relatively new concept into a secure and personalized experience for both merchants and consumers. The program includes integrated APIs and partner initiatives aimed at enabling developers to leverage Visa’s capabilities.

Some of the key features of Visa Intelligent Commerce include:

  • AI-Ready Cards: These replace traditional card information with tokenized credentials, improving security and simplifying payments. They ensure that only authorized agents can act on behalf of the consumer.

  • Personalized AI Shopping: Consumers can enhance their AI agents’ shopping abilities by sharing insights about their spending, allowing for tailored shopping recommendations.

  • Simple and Secure Payments: Users can easily set their spending limits and guidelines for transactions, with real-time communication with Visa to manage payment controls.

Visa’s technology, including tokenization and authentication APIs, aims to create a secure and seamless transaction experience, giving consumers confidence when shopping through AI. With decades of expertise in handling fraud, Visa is dedicated to making the Intelligent Commerce program a reliable platform for modern shoppers.
