Rising Stars in Stealth Warfare: South Korea and Turkey’s New Fighters
Since the debut of the F-22 Raptor in 2005, fifth-generation fighter jets have become the elite warriors of the skies. With features like extraordinary maneuverability, advanced technology, the ability to fly at high speeds for long periods, and stealth capabilities, these planes are some of the most sought-after assets for air forces around the world.
Currently, twelve nations operate one of four fifth-generation fighter models: the American F-22 and F-35, China’s J-20, and Russia’s Su-57. By 2030, that number could grow to twenty. Even more interestingly, South Korea and Turkey are set to join as new producers of these advanced aircraft, enhancing their presence in the global defense market.
South Korea’s "Fighting Hawk"
South Korea has unveiled its first domestically-produced fighter jet, the KF-21, known as the "Boramae," or "fighting hawk." Launched by Korean Aerospace Industries (KAI) on April 9, 2021, the KF-21 aims to evolve into a stealth fighter. This program has roots dating back to 2001 when the government sought to replace outdated aircraft.
The KF-21’s first prototype made its inaugural flight on July 19, 2022, and reached supersonic speeds on January 17, 2023. The aircraft has successfully conducted over 1,000 test flights and boasts impressive specs, like a speed of Mach 1.8 and an altitude ceiling of 50,000 feet.
Despite its capabilities, the KF-21 isn’t classified as a fifth-generation fighter yet. It lacks full stealth attributes like radar-absorbent materials and internal weapons bays, instead having ten external hardpoints. Therefore, experts label it a "4.5 generation" fighter.
However, KAI plans to develop a more advanced version called the KF-21EX, which will include stealth features. Improvements are expected to roll out by the late 2030s or early 2040s, with the South Korean Air Force anticipating delivery of 20 aircraft between late 2026 and mid-2027, targeting a total of 120 by 2032.
Turkey’s "King of Kings"
Meanwhile, Turkey is also working on its fifth-generation fighter, the TAI TF Kaan. Originally planned to supplement a fleet of F-16s, the Kaan’s development intensified after Turkey was removed from the F-35 program in 2019 due to its acquisition of Russian missile systems.
The Kaan was publicly revealed in 2023 and has made significant progress, with the first flight occurring shortly after. With dimensions similar to the F-22 Raptor, the Kaan is designed to carry up to 20,000 pounds of armaments but has limitations regarding its internal weapon capacity.
Similar to the KF-21, the Kaan’s stealth capabilities are still under scrutiny. Equipped with engines not specifically designed for stealth, the aircraft may face challenges in achieving low observability. TAI claims to be developing advanced materials to enhance stealth, but details on the project’s progress remain limited.
As Turkey moves forward, it expects to deliver 20 Kaans to the Turkish Air Force by 2028 or 2029.
Expanding the Global Fighter Landscape
Both the KF-21 and Kaan represent opportunities for countries that previously had no access to advanced stealth aircraft. The high costs and complex acquisition processes surrounding fifth-generation fighters often limit their availability. However, these more affordable options may encourage nations to bolster their air capabilities.
For instance, Indonesia plans to purchase 48 units of the KF-21, while the Kaan has already piqued the interest of allies like Azerbaijan, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia. These developments suggest a future where more nations innovate in stealth technology, posing new dynamics in global air power.
In summary, the advancements made by South Korea and Turkey in developing their own fifth-generation fighters indicate a significant shift in the landscape of military aviation, one that could redefine air warfare in years to come.
