Alexander Zverev Calls for Heckler’s Ejection during Munich Open Match

Zverev Faces Heckler During Munich Open Quarterfinal Match

Alexander Zverev encountered a disruptive fan during his quarterfinal match at the Munich Open on Friday, April 18. While serving at 5-5 in the second set against Tallon Griekspoor, a spectator loudly taunted the German player, making reference to his past domestic abuse allegations by shouting, "Let’s go, you… wifebeater!"

Initially, Zverev maintained his composure and did not respond to the heckler, though other fans expressed their disapproval of the outburst. After winning the 11th game of the set, Zverev approached the chair umpire, Fergus Murphy, and requested that the heckler be removed from the venue. "Fergus, please kick him out," Zverev reportedly said. It remains unclear if any action was taken regarding the fan after Zverev’s request.

A Long Battle for Victory

In a hard-fought match that lasted over three hours, Zverev ultimately emerged victorious with a score of 6-7 (6), 7-6 (3), 6-4, managing to avenge his recent loss to Griekspoor at Indian Wells last month. After the match, Zverev expressed feeling "mentally exhausted" but took a moment to thank the crowd for their support. "I don’t even care if it was a roller-coaster ride, I won. The crowd carried me to victory. I was already mentally exhausted, but they cheered me on in the decisive phase," he stated.

This was not Zverev’s first encounter with an unruly fan. Earlier this year, he experienced a similar situation during a presentation ceremony at the Rod Laver Arena, where he was also heckled.

Looking ahead, Zverev is set to face Hungary’s Fabian Marozsan in the semi-finals of the Munich Open. Marozsan reached this stage after defeating Belgian player Zizou Bergs in a close match, finishing with scores of 7-6 (4), 7-6 (3).
