NATE Launches Ikeja Chapter to Foster Engineering Excellence

By Funmilola Gboteku

The Nigerian Association of Technologists in Engineering (NATE) has officially launched its new Ikeja Chapter, with a strong emphasis on maintaining professional standards, promoting ethical conduct, and utilizing new technologies to enhance engineering growth.

Mr. Dominic Udoatan, the President of NATE, addressed members during the chartering ceremony held in Lagos. The event was themed “Building a Stronger Professional Community Through Unity, Collaboration and Excellence.”

Udoatan highlighted that establishing the new chapter is a significant step forward, reflecting a shared commitment to fortify the engineering technology profession in Nigeria. He urged members to prove their significance through competence, innovation, integrity, and active contributions to national progress.

He stated, “Engineering technologists must ensure they meet the needs of modern infrastructure while adhering to ethical standards and safety protocols that safeguard both practitioners and the public.”

According to Udoatan, the true worth of any professional organization goes beyond just its number of members; it lies in the standards it upholds, the opportunities it creates, and the positive impact it has on society.

He acknowledged the various challenges faced by industries, infrastructure, and technology, emphasizing the need for skilled professionals who can turn technical knowledge into practical solutions. The chartering of this chapter presents a chance for engineering technologists to showcase their significant impact on Nigeria’s development.

Udoatan encouraged members of the new chapter to embrace unity, professionalism, and service, advising them to put aside personal interests and disagreements that could disrupt their shared goals. He called for an environment that supports professional growth, provides mentorship for younger engineers, and translates the association’s values into real accomplishments.

“You are now recognized and responsible,” he said. “You have the chance to create a chapter that exemplifies discipline, professional excellence, and strong leadership.”

The keynote speaker, Prof. Peter Ekong, Director-General of the Nigerian College of Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental Management, encouraged members to adopt emerging technologies. He mentioned crucial areas such as artificial intelligence, automation, renewable energy, digital engineering, robotics, and advanced manufacturing.

Ekong emphasized the importance of local technological development, urging engineering technologists to use their skills to tackle local challenges, enhance industrial productivity, and contribute to sustainable national progress. He envisioned the Ikeja Chapter as a hub for professional excellence, where seasoned members mentor newcomers and devise solutions for societal needs.

He further advised the chapter to outline a focused action plan that promotes membership growth, continuous development, industry collaboration, and community engagement. “Members should nurture a supportive professional culture that values innovation and a collective drive for excellence,” he added.

Mr. Victor Oyedele, the Chairman of NATE’s Lagos Branch, expressed hopes that the new chapter would prioritize active membership engagement and ongoing professional training. He anticipates that it will serve as a beacon of excellence, innovation, unity, and strong leadership within the association.

During the event, Udoatan also inaugurated the Ikeja Chapter’s executive committee. Dr. Friday Ekpo was appointed Chairman, while Mr. Michael Okikiri took on the role of Vice-Chairman. Other new officers include Jane Essien as General Secretary, Mr. Kabir Mohammed as Treasurer, and several others filling key positions in finance, membership, technical, and publicity roles.

The celebration also recognized outstanding members of NATE with awards, highlighting their dedication and achievements.
