Kieron Pollard has informed the Joburg Super Kings that he will not be participating in the upcoming SA20 season. This announcement came just a day after he was named head coach of the Mumbai Indians for IPL 2027, as reported by Cricbuzz. The former West Indies all-rounder had been acquired by the Johannesburg franchise for R1.5 million during the SA20 auction on October 7 but has opted out to avoid any potential conflicts in franchise cricket.
Pollard’s decision to withdraw aligns with his recent promotion to head coach of the Mumbai Indians, which was announced on October 24. It’s worth noting that the Joburg Super Kings are owned by the same group that runs the Chennai Super Kings, while the Mumbai Indians’ owners are also behind MI Cape Town in the SA20. Pollard had previous experience playing for MI Cape Town in this tournament.
Pollard has a deep-rooted connection with the Mumbai Indians, having played for them in multiple leagues and being a part of five IPL championship teams. His decision to step back from the SA20 allows him to concentrate on his new coaching role.
An MI source had earlier mentioned that the franchise was not against Pollard playing for a different team in another league, stating, “It’s up to KP on the matter. We have given no instructions,” before Pollard confirmed his unavailability to Joburg Super Kings.
CSK’s chief executive, Kasi Viswanathan, verified Pollard’s withdrawal, saying, “He has conveyed to us that he will not be able to play for Joburg Super Kings. We will now look for a replacement.”
### Pollard Takes Over as Head Coach of Mumbai Indians
Pollard’s appointment as head coach of the Mumbai Indians follows Mahela Jayawardene’s departure from the position. Jayawardene led the franchise to three IPL titles during his first tenure from 2017 to 2022.
Pollard’s promotion had been in the works for a few days before it was made official. Mumbai Indians management finalized the decision about three to four days ahead of the announcement and brought Pollard to Mumbai for discussions. After multiple talks in the following days, his appointment was confirmed.
The franchise’s management viewed Pollard’s strong relationship with the Mumbai Indians and his respected status within the team as vital reasons for his selection. As a legendary figure in the franchise, Pollard is well-respected by both staff and senior players, making him a fitting leader for the team.
Pollard enjoyed a successful playing career with the Mumbai Indians, winning five IPL titles before retiring from the tournament after the 2022 season. He continued his association with the franchise as their batting coach, and this new role marks his first head coaching position with the team ahead of IPL 2027.
The fifth season of the SA20 tournament is set to take place from January 17 to February 21, 2027.
