Elon Musk is considering merging his companies SpaceX and Tesla, a move that could benefit him personally but may raise concerns for Tesla shareholders. Combining these two major ventures could help Musk streamline his business interests, making it easier to manage his extensive projects.

On a positive note, joining forces could create a vast company with diverse revenue sources, potentially lowering costs and helping finance Musk’s vision of multi-planetary exploration. However, there are risks involved. A mix of technology from satellites to electric vehicles could lead to a confusing conglomerate that might not appeal to investors.

Musk expressed his thoughts on this potential merger, stating that it “would be a good idea” after months of speculation. Both Tesla and SpaceX have been collaborating in various areas; for instance, Tesla supplies cars and batteries to SpaceX, while they are working on a chip-making project together known as Terafab. Tesla has also invested $2 billion into SpaceX.

Despite the connections between the two companies, financial analysts find it challenging to see the need for a merger beyond their existing partnership. For example, Tesla’s upcoming flying Roadster isn’t expected to go into production until 2028 and may rely on SpaceX’s thrusters. The real-world application of those thrusters remains uncertain.

Future collaborations, such as Tesla’s humanoid robots potentially assisting in space endeavors or AI technology from SpaceX benefiting Tesla, are interesting but still far off. Meanwhile, Musk stated that Terafab aims to produce its first chips next year, but achieving consistent production is a complex task.

When looking at big businesses like Berkshire Hathaway, success comes from having steady companies with reliable profits, unlike the varied dynamics present in SpaceX’s offerings. The value of SpaceX’s different units varies greatly, making it hard for investors to decide how to assess the whole.

Analysts suggest that there may already be a “conglomerate discount” affecting company shares, meaning that a merger could potentially lower their combined value of around $3.66 trillion. Tesla shareholders might be particularly at risk, as a larger company could be forced to support struggling sectors, which could hinder Tesla’s independent growth.

While SpaceX has already branched out into different areas, Tesla still has a clearer focus on electric vehicles and solar energy. However, Musk’s ambitious plans often involve a lot of speculation, making the investment landscape tricky for potential shareholders. His vision continues to draw a dedicated following, but the uncertain nature of combining all his interests raises questions for investors.

Merging these companies would mark a significant step in Musk’s long-running desire to consolidate his business interests into a cohesive entity, reminiscent of his earlier efforts with financial startup X.com. Yet, many of these grand ambitions have yet to fully materialize, leading to cautious excitement and skepticism among investors regarding a potential merger.
