The Congress party has dismissed the idea of welcoming the YSR Congress Party into the INDIA coalition. They remain doubtful about the recent gestures made by former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy toward the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) and his expression of regret for supporting a bill that granted lifetime immunity to Chief Election Commissioners. While some members of the opposition alliance view Reddy’s stance positively, Congress is cautious.
A strategist within Congress, who engages with the INDIA bloc, stated, “I don’t see how Jagan Mohan Reddy can connect with us. If he wishes to back the CJP or express concern over the SIR, we must be careful as his party has routinely backed the BJP in passing legislation, including a delimitation-related constitutional amendment bill earlier this year.”
This strategist suggested that Reddy might be trying to strengthen his ties with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which currently partners with the ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in Andhra Pradesh. On October 14, Reddy took to social media to say, “A proactive approach always yields better results than a reactive stance. There are flaws in the system that need to be addressed. We must restore trust in our electoral process. The arrests of Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka don’t solve anything; they only worsen the situation. I sympathize with @SauravDassss and @AshutoshRanka.”
The tension between Congress and Reddy goes back to 2009 when his father, YS Rajasekhara Reddy, died in a helicopter crash. Jagan was seen as a likely successor for the Chief Ministership, but Congress appointed K Rosaiah instead. After being denied permission for a rally across undivided Andhra Pradesh, he left Congress.
Another Congress leader pointed out that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had filed a petition in the Telangana High Court on September 23, seeking quick and daily trials for Reddy and others under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
However, MA Baby, the general secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), disagrees with Congress’s stance. He criticized the Union government’s actions, claiming they target people without evidence, and accused the ED and CBI of being manipulated. Baby expressed a desire for everyone outside the NDA to address issues related to electoral fairness, and noted he had reached out to Reddy, expressing support for his position.
On the other hand, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) highlighted that former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has remained in contact with parties like BJD, YSR Congress, and AAP, who don’t usually align well with Congress. Banerjee mentioned that while these parties have their local conflicts with Congress, it would be beneficial for the INDIA bloc to expand and include their perspectives.
Lastly, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and TDP leader Chandrababu Naidu accused Reddy of double standards regarding election authorities. According to a PTI report, Naidu asserted that Reddy is utilizing the current political situation for his own advantage, arguing that support for constitutional authorities should not be driven by political convenience.
