Ankit Bawne Shines on Opening Day of Ranji Trophy Season with 25th Century
On the first day of the new Ranji Trophy season, Ankit Bawne showcased his talent and determination, scoring 105 not out against Services at the Air Force Cricket Ground in Delhi. After hitting a boundary off left-arm spinner Arjun Sharma, Bawne celebrated his landmark century with a passionate roar, reminiscent of cricket star Virat Kohli. This century marked a significant moment for the 33-year-old batsman as it was his 25th first-class century, especially following a challenging previous season that left him with doubts about his place in the game.
The weather at the ground was pleasant; however, the pitch conditions were tough for batting. The ball frequently kept low and the bowlers from Services made it even more challenging for the Maharashtra team. Despite the noise from planes taking off from the nearby airport, Bawne remained focused, accumulating runs patiently. His innings provided a solid foundation for Maharashtra, who ended the day at 287 for 5.
Assessing the day’s play, Bawne expressed a mix of joy and relief. “This century means a lot to me,” he said. “After a tough previous season where I struggled to score, I felt a need to prove myself, not just to others, but to myself.”
With an impressive record of over 8,400 runs across 131 first-class matches, it may seem surprising that Bawne would question his capabilities. However, after a disappointing last season where he managed only 72 runs in seven matches, doubts crept into his mind. Without the captaincy this season and with Prithvi Shaw leading the team in the absence of Ruturaj Gaikwad, Bawne was eager to put his struggles behind him.
Reflecting on his past challenges, he acknowledged, “Every year is a new opportunity to prove yourself. I realized that I can’t rely solely on my past achievements.” With a shared understanding of the game’s pressures, his father offered unwavering support during difficult times, reminding him that even cricket legends face slumps.
Bawne undertook rigorous practice sessions during his break from competitive cricket, focusing on addressing the techniques that had faltered. He aimed to refine his skills ahead of the new season, visualizing his innings each night and reminding himself of his capabilities.
As the season progresses, Bawne aims to maintain his momentum and hopes for an India call-up. “If I can consistently score runs, I believe opportunities will come my way. My goal remains to contribute to my team and knock on the doors for higher selection,” he stated.
The journey ahead remains filled with challenges, but Bawne’s recent performance serves as a powerful reminder of his determination and talent. His celebration of the century was not just a personal victory but a testament to his resilience in the face of adversity. As he continues to fight for his place in the sport, Bawne is ready to confront whatever comes his way this season, eager to achieve even greater heights.
