India Edges Out West Indies in Thrilling T20 Match
In an exciting encounter on Sunday, Abhishek Sharma’s explosive knock of 69 propelled India to a narrow 14-run victory against the West Indies in the third T20 international. The match took place in Indore, where India set a challenging target by scoring 223 runs and successfully defended it, limiting West Indies to 209-7. This win gives India a 2-1 lead in the five-match series.
India’s captain, Shreyas Iyer, expressed his happiness with the bowlers’ confidence. He noted, “The clarity was very much visible during our discussions. They were ready to take on the challenge, which is exactly what we want.”
The previous games in the series saw the team batting second emerge victorious, with the West Indies achieving an impressive chase of 250 runs on Friday.
Abhishek Sharma quickly set the tone for India, forming a solid partnership with Ishan Kishan, who contributed 37 runs. Together, they put up 108 runs before the West Indies were able to make their first breakthroughs. Abhishek reached his half-century in just 18 balls, showcasing his aggressive batting style.
After a slow start with Sanju Samson only managing to score three runs, Abhishek’s efforts, which included six fours and five sixes, were vital. However, the West Indies bowlers, including spinner Roston Chase and pace bowler Shamar Springer, managed to disrupt India’s momentum by taking key wickets.
Tilak Varma (28) and Nitish Kumar Reddy (21) contributed valuable runs as India’s innings progressed. Late-order hitters like Axar Patel, who scored 20, and Prince Yadav, who finished with 13 runs off six balls, helped bolster the total further.
West Indies captain Shai Hope reflected on their bowling performance, suggesting they could have executed better. He said, “Those little margins could be the deciding factor at the end of the game.”
During the West Indies chase, Hope, who had previously scored a stunning unbeaten 102, was dismissed cheaply for five by Arshdeep Singh. Shimron Hetmyer played a brief and aggressive innings, hitting 43 runs off just 26 balls, but his dismissal by Naman Dhir marked a turning point in the match.
As wickets continued to tumble, Sherfane Rutherford tried to salvage the innings with 32 runs off 20 balls before Arshdeep clinched his wicket, effectively ending West Indies’ hopes of a comeback.
The series will continue with the fourth match scheduled for Wednesday in Hyderabad.
