Finance Minister Heads to Bangkok for Key Global Meetings

On Saturday, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb left for Bangkok to represent Pakistan at the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group. These important discussions are set to take place from October 12 to October 18.

This year’s event in Thailand will gather over 15,000 participants from 191 countries, including central bank governors, economic policymakers, and business leaders. They will meet to talk about various issues concerning the global economy.

According to a statement from the finance ministry, Minister Aurangzeb will lead Pakistan’s delegation in discussions at the IMF and World Bank meetings. He is expected to engage in more than 60 high-level interactions with international financial institutions, other finance ministers, and key policymakers, as well as representatives from global banks and investment firms.

The visit is crucial as Pakistan aims to transition from macroeconomic stabilization to achieving more sustainable growth driven by investments and exports. This journey includes advancing structural reforms and enhancing connections with international financial markets and partners.

During his time in Bangkok, Aurangzeb plans to hold discussions with leadership from the IMF and World Bank Group, addressing Pakistan’s economic outlook, progress on reforms, and prospects for private sector development and cooperation.

He will also attend a meeting with the IMF managing director, alongside finance ministers and central bank governors from the Middle East, North Africa, Afghanistan, and Pakistan.

A series of meetings with leaders from major development institutions, like the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank and the Saudi Fund for Development, will also take place. These discussions aim to bolster Pakistan’s economic ties and partnerships in investment and trade.

On a bilateral level, Minister Aurangzeb is scheduled for meetings with his counterparts from Saudi Arabia, China, Turkey, Iran, the United Kingdom, and Thailand. These engagements aim to strengthen cooperation in economic matters and trade. He will also meet representatives from the U.S. Department of the Treasury to advance economic collaboration and discuss Pakistan’s reform agenda.

Furthermore, Aurangzeb will participate in investment seminars and discussions with international financial institutions. These platforms will allow him to showcase Pakistan’s improving economic indicators, reform initiatives, and potential for investment.

The finance minister is also expected to hold talks with Alibaba concerning opportunities in Pakistan’s digital economy and e-commerce sector.

In addition to his meetings, he will take part in high-level policy discussions at various forums and interact with major global credit rating agencies such as Fitch Ratings, Moody’s, and S&P Global to present Pakistan’s economic story to international investors.

Through these engagements, Aurangzeb aims to emphasize Pakistan’s achievements in stabilizing its economy, implementing structural reforms, and returning to the international capital markets, while laying out priorities for investment and economic growth.
