Harness Acquires Key Augment Code Assets to Revolutionize Software Automation | Tech Update

Harness Inc, a platform focused on delivering artificial intelligence (AI) software, has acquired certain assets from the AI coding platform Augment Code, though the financial details remain private. This acquisition is set to enhance the way automated software development is executed, giving Harness more influence over machine-generated code.

The assets purchased include Augment’s Cosmos, Auggie CLI products, and a code context engine, along with accompanying technologies. The teams linked to these products will also be merging with Harness, helping to speed up the company’s efforts towards a more automated software development lifecycle.

According to Harness founder and CEO Jyoti Bansal, this acquisition expands their capabilities into the coding phase. He noted that having the correct context when coding can lead to safer and more reliable code from the beginning. Since Harness oversees processes that include testing, security, compliance, and governance, they possess important insights into how organizations operate. Integrating this context into the coding process can enhance the quality of code before it goes through later evaluations.

Bansal, who previously founded the software company AppDynamics—which was acquired by Cisco for around $3.7 billion in 2017—expressed his ambition for a fully autonomous software development lifecycle that spans from the initial idea to production. Currently based in San Francisco, Harness has a valuation of approximately $5.5 billion after securing $240 million in their Series E funding round in 2025.

He elaborated that Augment Code’s software factory product, Cosmos, can transform an idea or ticket into code through a series of automated agents, bringing developers into the conversation when necessary. The plan is to integrate this software factory into the Harness platform for a streamlined, end-to-end development pipeline.

Harness is specifically targeting challenges that arise during the post-coding phase. Although machines are capable of producing millions of lines of code, the verification process still requires human oversight to ensure quality, security, and compliance, which can consume a significant portion of time after coding is complete. The integration of AI into areas such as testing, deployment, and cost management is essential, as these can account for 70-80% of the post-coding workload.

When asked about the motivation behind the acquisition, Bansal explained that the effectiveness of automated agents hinges on the context they utilize. By merging coding context with data from various testing and compliance processes, AI can generate higher quality code from the start, mitigating risks related to potential failures later on due to security or quality issues.

Harness, with notable clients such as Citibank, United Airlines, and PayPal, anticipates reaching cumulative revenues of about $400 million by the end of 2026, particularly with the banking, financial services, and insurance (BFSI) sector expected to contribute nearly 30% of this total. The company employs around 1,300 people worldwide, with 500 based in India.

Igor Ostrovsky, co-founder and CTO of Augment Code, remarked that the goal has always been to bring AI into the entire software development lifecycle, beginning with context-aware coding. He stated that joining forces with Harness represents an important step toward achieving that vision, aiming to make engineering processes more autonomous, allowing engineers to intervene only when their expertise is truly essential.
