Ottawa and New Delhi Strengthen Security Ties
New Delhi, India – David Morrison, the Senior Diplomatic and International Affairs Advisor to the Prime Minister of Canada, made an official visit to India from October 5 to 7, 2026. This visit was at the invitation of India’s National Security Adviser, Shri Ajit Doval, and marked another step in the ongoing security dialogue between the two countries.
The discussions in New Delhi come after previous NSA meetings held in September 2025 and in February 2026 in Canada. Both parties expressed satisfaction with the direction set by their prime ministers during their earlier meetings in March 2026 and at the G7 Summit in Évian in June 2026.
Over the past year, Canada and India have worked together to build a strong and cooperative relationship based on trust and respect for each other’s viewpoints and goals. They are also eager to push forward negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) and discussed opportunities to grow their defense partnership.
During the recent talks, both nations reviewed their ongoing security and law enforcement efforts, particularly the Security Work Plan agreed upon in February 2026. They agreed on the importance of working together to combat issues such as organized crime, terrorism, and cyber threats. Additionally, they are committed to finding new ways to cooperate, including discussions on cyber security and economic stability.
Both sides concluded that enhancing existing communication frameworks and establishing new channels for information sharing would be crucial for addressing mutual concerns effectively. They also exchanged insights on regional and global developments that could affect their partnership.
In summary, this meeting signifies a continued commitment to deepening security ties and collaborative efforts between Canada and India.
