AI Arms Race Transforms Fraud Landscape Across EMEA, Says FICO

Rising Challenges in Fraud Prevention Across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa

Recent findings from FICO reveal that organizations in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) are facing increasingly complex fraud issues, especially with the introduction of artificial intelligence (AI). According to a global survey with contributions from 202 experts in fraud, risk, and technology from retail banks, neobanks, and fintech companies, 52% of EMEA organizations are now highlighting growing fraud complexity as their top challenge—up from 40% among firms worldwide.

The report also noted that nearly half of the respondents identified effectively integrating AI into their existing fraud prevention measures as a significant difficulty. This shows that operational challenges are just as crucial as technological ones when it comes to using AI to combat fraud.

Key Findings from the FICO Report

  • More than one-third (36%) of EMEA institutions have reported an increase in fraud attempts exceeding 25% over the last two years.
  • About 28% of organizations noted that financial losses from fraud have also surged by more than 25% during this period.
  • Effective AI integration is viewed as a major challenge for 48% of those surveyed in EMEA, mirroring global concerns.

“Fraud in this region is not spiraling out of control, but it is definitely more sophisticated,” stated Adam Davies, who oversees Product Management at FICO. He mentioned that scammers are now using the same advanced AI tools that banks are employing for protection, enabling them to carry out more complex schemes like social engineering, creating synthetic identities, and deepfake fraud. The successful institutions are those that create a cohesive fraud prevention strategy across their operations rather than merely implementing single solutions.

Additional Highlights from the Report

  • EMEA respondents rated AI-related fraud threats (4.42 out of 5) and social engineering scams (4.36) as greater concerns compared to the global averages (3.86 and 3.90, respectively).
  • A significant 86% of institutions in EMEA consider a unified fraud strategy across the organization to be vital. Among them, 38% view it as a critical priority, while 48% are focusing on it as a long-term objective.
  • Moreover, half (51%) of EMEA organizations are facing false positive rates exceeding 15%, complicating the user experience for legitimate customers.
  • Interestingly, third-party vendor models now play a larger role in influencing EMEA fraud decisions at 46%, in contrast to only 24% for in-house models. This indicates an increasing reliance on external expertise to address emerging challenges.

“The next two years will be characterized by the integration of various resources, rather than focusing on a single technological solution,” added Davies. He emphasized that while EMEA institutions have established a robust framework for AI-driven detection, the next step is to combine internal models, vendor data, and consortium insights. This integration will facilitate real-time decision-making without placing extra barriers on genuine customers.
