Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Important Insights from Experts
October is recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to emphasize the importance of early detection and prevention. Dr. Shea Everidge, a breast surgeon at Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare, emphasizes the significance of scheduling annual mammograms to catch potential signs of breast cancer early.
Statistics from the National Breast Cancer Foundation reveal a hopeful fact: the five-year survival rate for early-stage breast cancer, when diagnosed at a localized stage, is over 99%. This underscores the message from Dr. Everidge: early detection is crucial. She recommends that women start having regular screenings at the age of 40.
Dr. Everidge states, “Getting your mammogram every year is worthwhile because the earlier we find cancer, the simpler the treatment can be, and the higher your chances of surviving.” Interestingly, she notes that many women may not experience any symptoms at all.
“Often, during your annual mammogram, we identify issues while they are still very small—before they form a lump that can be felt or cause visible skin changes,” she explains.
However, some signs may indicate a need for a visit to the doctor. Dr. Everidge points out that nipple discharge, changes in the skin, and alterations in the shape of the breast should not be ignored.
As we observe this awareness month, it’s important to prioritize our health and spread the word about the lifesaving potential of early detection through regular screenings.
