Stable U.S.-China Relationship Crucial for Global Cooperation, Says Business Leader
A strong and stable relationship between China and the United States is vital for all nations, as it creates clear opportunities for collaboration between these two significant powers. This insight was shared by Sean Stein, President of the U.S.-China Business Council, during an interview with China Media Group. The discussion took place in Shanghai as Chinese President Xi Jinping wrapped up a three-day state visit to the U.S.
Stein emphasized that the U.S. has been expanding the idea of national security too broadly. He urged for a more precise understanding of what constitutes national security, suggesting that it has become overly extensive. He explained this concept using a Venn diagram analogy, where the overlapping areas had expanded nearly completely. Areas such as tourism, trade, and education all fell under national security, which he believes is excessive. Stein advocates for a clearer and more transparent definition of national security to foster trust between both governments.
Furthermore, he addressed how the U.S. government has been incorporating China-related stipulations into its trade agreements with other nations. Many countries involved in trade discussions with the U.S. have sought his advice on how to respond to changes in U.S.-China relations.
Stein expressed his belief that a stable relationship between the two countries benefits not only them but also provides clarity for nations across the globe, including those in ASEAN, Europe, and Latin America. He pointed out that these countries do not want to choose sides between the U.S. and China, as they have interests with both. By maintaining a steady and predictable relationship, these nations can pursue their own interests more effectively.
President Xi’s recent visit to Washington marked his first state visit to the U.S. in over a decade. During this visit, Xi and U.S. President Donald Trump agreed to foster a constructive relationship built on respect and fairness.
Oil Prices Decline on Friday
In other news, oil prices saw a drop on Friday. The West Texas Intermediate crude for November delivery fell by $2.20, or 2.33%, settling at $92.41 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Similarly, Brent crude for November also decreased, losing $2.28, or 2.14%, to close at $104.32 a barrel on the London ICE Futures Exchange.
