Microsoft’s Xbox Faces Challenges After Recent Layoffs
Microsoft’s gaming division has made headlines recently after laying off a considerable number of employees as part of a broader restructuring effort. This week, the company continued this trend with even more layoffs and the closure of certain studios, following the exit of 1,600 workers over the summer.
In light of these changes, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella expressed optimism, praising Xbox CEO Asha Sharma for her role in navigating these difficult times. During a discussion on the Sources Podcast, Nadella mentioned, “There’s some streamlining happening within the team, and Asha is leading that effort, which is good to see.” He also expressed confidence in the company’s intellectual property (IP) and studios, stating, “I feel fantastic about our ability to produce great games moving forward.”
Nadella highlighted the need for a sustainable business model to expand gaming accessibility for more people. He believes that finding the right approach is crucial for the gaming sector’s future.
Shifting gears, Nadella addressed a notable concern regarding artificial intelligence (AI). He posed a question about the skepticism surrounding AI among Western consumers, suggesting it contrasts with more positive attitudes in other parts of the world. He stated, “I think we haven’t given AI the chance to prove itself.” He referenced a Gallup poll showing low confidence in AI in the West and noted the discrepancy with views in countries like Nigeria. Nadella suggested that the industry must earn trust and demonstrate the benefits of AI to consumers and communities to change the narrative.
Meanwhile, AI critic Ed Zitron pointed to what he describes as “catastrophic mismanagement” at Microsoft as a factor contributing to Xbox’s struggles, along with unsuccessful ventures in the AI sector. Despite the recent layoffs, there’s talk of further job cuts looming for Xbox, suggesting that challenges lie ahead for the gaming giant.
