Vapers Seek Unexpected Path to Breaking Free from the Habit

E-cigarettes have gained popularity as a substitute for traditional smoking, but recent studies suggest that some adults trying to quit vaping are going back to cigarettes. New data from Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) indicates that a number of smokers, as well as people who use both vapes and cigarettes, often choose to revert to conventional tobacco products after stopping vaping. Addiction specialists say this trend may be linked to nicotine dependence and the withdrawal challenges that come with it.

Trent Carter, a certified nurse practitioner and CEO of Renew Health in New Mexico, explained that the switch back to cigarettes, while surprising, has some behavioral roots. He noted that vaping can easily become a constant activity throughout the day, whereas smoking a cigarette tends to be a more deliberate event. “When you’re vaping, you might not realize how frequently you’re doing it, while with cigarettes, you feel more in control since you have to step outside and light one up,” Carter shared.

The convenience of vaping, especially indoors, can lead to higher nicotine consumption. Unlike traditional cigarettes, which require breaks, vaping can become a continuous habit, reinforcing the hand-to-mouth behavior that many users find hard to break.

Withdrawal Challenges and High Nicotine Levels
E-cigarettes can be particularly addictive due to how they deliver nicotine. Many vaping devices use high concentrations of nicotine salts, enabling users to inhale larger amounts with each puff compared to cigarettes. Carter emphasized that consuming high levels of nicotine makes quitting much harder. “If you’re taking in a lot of nicotine with every puff, stopping becomes more challenging than if you’re using a lower dose,” he explained.

Nicotine dependence affects brain chemistry, influencing mood and pleasure. Sudden cessation of high nicotine intake often triggers rapid withdrawal symptoms, ranging from strong cravings and irritability to severe sleep issues and difficulty concentrating.

Standard quitting aids like nicotine patches or gums might not be enough for those who have become accustomed to high-potency vapes. According to Carter, “While these products can help curb cravings, they often don’t address the behavioral aspects behind smoking, such as managing anxiety or insomnia.”

Misleading Perceptions of Safety
When e-cigarettes were first introduced, they were often marketed as a safer alternative to smoking, leading many to underestimate how difficult it could be to quit. “When we’re told something is safe or approved by doctors, it gives us a false sense of security,” Carter noted. While e-cigarettes do not contain some of the harmful substances found in traditional cigarettes, higher nicotine use can lead to other health issues.

Heavy nicotine intake can lead to increased blood pressure, faster heart rates, sleep disruptions, and greater anxiety, according to experts.

Finding a Better Way to Quit
Switching back to cigarettes from vaping reintroduces harmful toxins, tar, and carbon monoxide, making it a dangerous choice. Health professionals advocate for quitting strategies that include medical supervision, behavioral therapy, and a gradual lowering of nicotine intake instead of bouncing between vapes and cigarettes.

Carter advised, “The goal shouldn’t be to find another way to consume nicotine but to address the addiction itself.” He emphasized that the path to quitting should focus on understanding and tackling the reasons behind the dependence.

For those struggling to overcome this cycle, building self-awareness and seeking support from a licensed addiction or mental health professional can lead to a more personalized recovery plan.
