A country’s diaspora can be a source of pride and strength. People from a nation living abroad often share their success stories, enhance the country’s cultural image, and contribute to its economy through sending money home, investing, and sharing their skills and knowledge.
India and China are home to some of the largest diasporas worldwide, each showcasing different ways their countries benefit from citizens living abroad.
In India, the perspective on the diaspora has changed dramatically over the years. Before economic reforms in 1991, many viewed those who emigrated as a loss of talent, or a “brain drain.” However, following the liberalization of the economy, the narrative shifted. The Indian diaspora began to be recognized as a crucial link to foreign investment, technology, and global trade opportunities. To better support Indians living overseas, the Indian government established a dedicated ministry in 2004, which later merged with the Ministry of External Affairs in 2016 to enhance coordination and support for its diaspora.
