India’s War on Drugs Intensifies at District Level
In a significant announcement, Union Home Minister Amit Shah revealed that India will now focus its fight against drug trafficking at the district level. This change aims to make local administrative units the main front in efforts to dismantle illegal drug networks.
During the opening of the third National Conference of Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) heads in Delhi, Shah discussed a new strategy that targets drug trafficking from the ground up. He stated that all districts will be categorized into three groups: those where drugs are manufactured or enter the country, those that serve as transportation routes, and those with high drug consumption rates.
To combat drug cartels, enforcement agencies will implement a multi-level approach to identify key points of drug operations, inter-state distribution lines, and local sales networks. State police are being urged to turn raw information into useful intelligence and make this a daily routine in their operations.
Shah emphasized the need for quick action within all state ANTFs. He called for a shift from traditional meeting formats to active missions, focusing not just on reporting but achieving actual results, and moving from simple seizure of drugs to completely dismantling drug networks. This involves going from merely starting a case to achieving full convictions in court.
Reaffirming India’s commitment to preventing any drugs from entering or leaving the country, Shah expressed confidence that this new grassroots approach will lead to a ‘Nasha Mukt Bharat’ (Drug-Free India) by the year 2029.
He also directed police forces to conduct in-depth investigations rather than just surface-level drug seizures. This includes thorough financial audits and digital tracking to cut off funding for drug cartels. Shah highlighted the importance of closely working with public prosecutors throughout the legal process.
In response to global challenges, Shah urged states to form specialized teams to handle emerging drug threats, especially synthetic drugs, diversion of precursor chemicals, and online trafficking methods. He called for a dedicated effort to deport and blacklist foreign drug offenders in India and track down those supplying drugs from abroad.
