Lawsuits Filed Over Vision Loss Claims Linked to Popular Weight-Loss Drugs
In recent news, hundreds of individuals have taken legal action against the makers of GLP-1 receptor agonists, claiming these medications could lead to a rare type of vision loss known as NAION (nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy). This information comes from reports by major news outlets.
NAION is a condition that affects the optic nerve, causing a sudden loss of vision. It commonly impacts adults over 50 and is referred to as an “eye stroke” by experts from the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the National Eye Institute.
Dr. Douglas Lazzaro, an ophthalmologist at NYU Langone Health, emphasized that NAION has no existing treatment, which can result in serious and lasting vision impairment.
The companies involved, Novo Nordisk—producers of Ozempic and Wegovy—and Eli Lilly, which makes Mounjaro and Zepbound, have denied these allegations. They argue that there is no evidence to support the claim that their medications increase the risk of NAION.
A study mentioned in JAMA Ophthalmology suggested that users of semaglutide, a type of GLP-1 medication, might face a slightly higher risk of NAION compared to those taking a different class of diabetes drugs. A similar study from Harvard Medical School found that individuals with type 2 diabetes using semaglutide had a fourfold increased risk of developing NAION, though the overall risk remained very low.
Despite these studies, the FDA is still reviewing the situation and has not issued any warnings regarding semaglutide. Meanwhile, the European Medicines Agency has identified a potential link and advises that these medications include NAION as a very rare side effect.
Experts note that people who take GLP-1 drugs often have underlying conditions, such as diabetes and obesity, which are known risk factors for NAION. This complicates the ability to determine if the medications are the direct cause.
Symptoms of NAION typically involve sudden and painless vision loss in one eye, which usually occurs in the morning. Other signs may include blurred vision and a loss of peripheral vision.
While charges claim a connection between the medications and NAION, Novo Nordisk argues the lawsuits lack merit, citing studies that show no increased risk linked to their drugs. Likewise, Eli Lilly is continuing to keep track of safety data and asserts current research does not establish causation between GLP-1 medications and NAION.
Dr. Lazzaro has also cautioned against discontinuing these medications without consulting a healthcare provider, highlighting that, for many, the benefits of treatment outweigh the risks.
