The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is preparing to find a new chief selector as Ajit Agarkar has decided to step down from the role. Sources reveal that Agarkar has already communicated to the BCCI his intention not to continue in this prominent position.
On Friday, during the BCCI’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), member units empowered the board’s officials to make decisions regarding Agarkar’s future as the chairman of selectors. Agarkar’s current contract is due to expire on October 4, placing him in the spotlight.
A senior BCCI official stated, “The office bearers have been authorized to make decisions related to the selection committees,” at the conclusion of the meeting.
The AGM saw participation from various affiliated state member boards, including notable figures like former India captain Sourav Ganguly from the Cricket Association of Bengal and ex-bowler Venkatesh Prasad from the Karnataka State Cricket Association.
In addition to the chief selector’s position, the BCCI is also aiming to fill all five spots on the junior selection committee. Secretary Devajit Saikia mentioned that the board has received a considerable number of applications for these junior roles and hopes to finalize the process within two weeks. “After we shortlist the applicants, the cricket committee will make the final selections,” Saikia explained.
He emphasized the urgency of completing this process soon, as the current junior selectors’ tenures are nearing their end.
Furthermore, Saikia talked about the appointment of Subhadeep Ghosh as the Indian team’s fielding coach, indicating that his role is temporary. “We will evaluate his performance during this short-term appointment, and based on feedback from the team management, we will decide if he will continue,” he added.
The BCCI’s recent discussions signal significant changes in the selection committees as they look forward to strengthening their cricketing setup.
