Hungary Asks Russian Diplomats to Leave Over Unacceptable Actions
Hungary has made a bold move by asking 10 members of the Russian diplomatic mission to leave the country. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Orban announced this decision, citing that these individuals had been involved in activities deemed “unacceptable” according to the Vienna Convention, which sets diplomatic standards.
In a post on X, Orban wrote, “On Tuesday, the relevant official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs informed the Russian ambassador to Hungary that we assessed 10 members of the Russian mission to have engaged in inappropriate behavior for diplomats under the Vienna Convention. As such, we have asked them to exit Hungary.”
Despite this expulsion, Orban clarified that Hungary is not cutting off its diplomatic ties with Russia. She emphasized that this action is taken to protect Hungary’s security and sovereignty, stating, “This decision does not mean we are breaking off diplomatic relations with Russia. Hungary aims to maintain a dialogue based on mutual respect and adherence to established rules.”
The Russian Foreign Ministry responded through the state news agency RIA Novosti, pledging to react appropriately to Hungary’s decision.
Hungary, which is part of the European Union, has received support from the European Commission, with spokesperson Christian Wigand acknowledging Hungary’s right to make this decision. He associated the expulsion with ongoing hybrid threats posed by Russia against the EU and its member states.
As Hungary continues to navigate its role on the international stage, the situation reflects the rising tensions within Europe regarding Russia’s activities.
