U.S. Steel has announced that Blast Furnace #14 at its Gary Works facility is back in operation after a significant relining project costing $350 million. This project involved over a million labor hours from both employees and contractors, all completed without any injuries—a remarkable achievement that highlights the dedication and teamwork of those involved.

The return of Blast Furnace #14 is a crucial milestone for Gary Works, showcasing U.S. Steel’s ongoing commitment to strengthening its operational capabilities. Alongside upgrades to the hot strip mill and other steel shop improvements, this investment is aimed at enhancing environmental performance as well as ensuring the reliability of operations.

As the largest blast furnace at Gary Works—and indeed within all of U.S. Steel’s facilities—Blast Furnace #14 is key for producing the high-quality American-made steel that a variety of industries rely on. The recent upgrades will secure the furnace’s ability to make iron, ensuring a consistent supply for the company’s customers.

David B. Burritt, U.S. Steel’s President and CEO, praised the project’s success. He stated, “The return of Blast Furnace #14 is a great example of our disciplined approach and a testament to the skill and dedication of everyone involved. This investment is essential for supporting American manufacturing and creating long-lasting value for our customers.”

The relining of the furnace included updating its refractory lining and restoring essential systems to promote safe and reliable operations, thus extending the life of the furnace. During the project, teams also carried out extensive maintenance on key infrastructure, including gas and cooling systems.

At the peak of the project, around 1,000 contractors were on-site daily, all focusing on safety and meticulous planning. This teamwork across various disciplines was crucial to the project’s successful completion.

Blast Furnace #14 is capable of producing over two million tons of hot metal each year, making it a vital part of U.S. Steel’s financial strategy. With upgraded technology, the company is reinforcing its leadership in the steel industry while utilizing iron ore pellets sourced from its operations in Minnesota, which supports a complete domestic supply chain from raw materials to finished steel.

Project Highlights:

  • Investment: $350 million
  • Labor Hours: Over 1 million
  • Peak Workforce: Approximately 1,000 contractors
  • Injury Rate: Zero Days Away Injury Rate
  • Capacity: Over 2 million tons of hot metal production annually

This project not only marks a significant achievement for U.S. Steel but also underscores the importance of investment in domestic manufacturing and infrastructure.
