Kanika Dhillon Addresses Plagiarism Concerns Surrounding ‘Gandhari’
Writer and producer Kanika Dhillon has recently shared her thoughts on the allegations of plagiarism related to her upcoming Netflix film, Gandhari, which stars Taapsee Pannu and Ishwak Singh. During the promotional activities for the movie, Dhillon expressed her worries about the increasing trend of such claims circulating on social media and their potential effects on writers and their creative works.
Dhillon explained that she feels this trend is becoming more common, especially when films attract significant attention. Given her long career and the number of projects she has worked on, she feels more susceptible to facing these types of allegations. “I’m genuinely concerned that this is turning into a pattern. I work on a lot of projects, and this puts me at a higher risk of facing claims,” she remarked.
She also pointed out how social media and gossip platforms can quickly spread unverified allegations, even when the final product reveals substantial differences from the projects being compared. “With social media and gossip sites, everything gets amplified. It can give people some fame for a moment, but it’s alarming. When the film is out, the truth often emerges, yet that brief fame can encourage others to make similar claims,” she noted.
Dhillon highlighted that these allegations can have effects that last far beyond the immediate moment. Creative individuals invest years into building their reputations, and even a reference to “alleged” wrongdoing can linger, affecting the accused person’s standing in the industry. “A claim can stem from genuine feelings, but we all work hard to maintain our reputations. When someone makes an allegation, it can hurt a person’s reputation, and the repercussions can last much longer than the news cycle,” she added.
Discussing similar issues with other films, Dhillon called for more careful consideration before allegations are made public. “We need to ensure that proper checks are in place to assess claims before they are blown out of proportion. This is becoming a growing issue, not just for me but for many creators in the industry,” she concluded.
Gandhari is set to debut on Netflix on September 3. This film marks another partnership between Dhillon and Pannu, who plays the lead in this action-packed narrative. The ongoing controversy has sparked broader discussions about originality and intellectual property within the Hindi film industry, especially at a time when social media can quickly magnify competing claims. For Dhillon, the most pressing concern remains the potential impact on the trust and collaboration among writers and filmmakers in the future.
