The Sports Ministry has confirmed the approval of a team of 246 officials and support staff for the upcoming 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, starting September 19. Initially, the Ministry sanctioned a total of 492 athletes, but some additional names, particularly in athletics, have now been included.
This brings India’s overall team size to 768, which consists of not just athletes but also 19 support personnel, including chef de mission Sahdev Yadav and chief medical officer Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala.
Among the athletes, the athletics team features 79 members and boasts the highest number of support staff—31 members, including 20 coaches, with P Radhakrishnan serving as the lead coach. Unfortunately, the team will be competing without star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, who is currently injured.
For cricket, each of the two national teams will have a support staff of 20, led by VVS Laxman. India plans to compete in 36 different sports over the course of the Games, which will conclude on October 4.
