Indian Women’s Hockey Coach Addresses Pre-World Cup Controversy
Sjoerd Marijne, the coach of the Indian women’s hockey team, has responded to the criticism surrounding his absence during the team’s training camps leading up to the World Cup. Reports suggested that Marijne was not physically present for the preparations, sparking controversy and criticism, including remarks from goalkeeper PR Sreejesh.
In an interview after the tournament, Marijne emphasized that his preparation for the World Cup remained effective despite not being on-site. He assured that he had maintained communication with the players and had closely followed their training and matches.
“I was involved in every aspect, holding meetings and staying in contact with the players. I was well-informed about everything happening,” Marijne stated, addressing the concerns raised by fans and critics alike.
He acknowledged that while some may not understand the full situation, he and his staff ensured everything was covered during the team’s preparation for the World Cup. Ultimately, their efforts paid off as the Indian team secured a commendable fifth-place finish, marking their best result since 1974.
Looking ahead, Marijne expressed his desire for the team to build on this achievement. “We’ve had a journey with its ups and downs, and now we must continue to strive for improvement. Staying hungry and eager to push ourselves is key,” he noted.
Marijne also shared his hopes that the team’s performance would inspire young people in India to take up hockey, especially in women’s sports. He mentioned the positive reactions from fans, noting that the growing interest in the team is encouraging.
“I’m optimistic that this attention will motivate young kids to start playing hockey,” he said.
As the Indian women’s hockey team looks to the future, their next challenge will be the Asian Games in Japan next month, where Marijne aims to see his team continue their upward trajectory.
