Mudslides and Floods Devastate Regions in Nepal and Tibet

A powerful 4.4-magnitude earthquake struck the border area between Nepal and China, triggering flash floods and mudslides that have severely impacted communities. The earthquake hit just minutes before dramatic footage emerged of residents in Gyirong, Tibet, urgently fleeing from rushing mud and debris.

Local authorities in Nepal reported that at least 95 people have died as rescue operations recover bodies from the affected areas. Additionally, around 484 tourists are missing, including reports of at least three Americans. The U.S. State Department is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with Nepali authorities to assist any American citizens affected by the disaster.

The mudslides, believed to have been instigated by the earthquake, led to an avalanche of ice and rock that poured into the Lhende Khola River, causing widespread destruction. Roads, bridges, and communication systems have suffered significant damage, prompting government officials to advise residents near riverbanks and in low-lying areas to relocate to safer locations.

Currently, about 65 individuals are receiving medical treatment in hospitals in and around Kathmandu. Authorities have also warned of the possibility of additional flooding due to continuing blockages along the river.

In response to the crisis, China has dispatched over 570 rescue workers to the severely affected area of Gyirong, though local challenges are complicating their efforts. The Indian government and the European Union have also offered support, with India’s Prime Minister expressing solidarity with Nepal and readiness to provide humanitarian assistance.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen addressed the crisis as well, expressing concern for those impacted and confirming that the EU’s Copernicus satellite program is activated to assist with mapping the affected regions.

As rescue efforts continue, the international community stands ready to assist, reflecting a collective commitment to support the people of Nepal and Tibet during this difficult time.
