A U.S. military transport plane was spotted landing at Moscow’s Vnukovo airport on Tuesday, although the Kremlin claimed it was unaware of the flight, according to reports. The airplane, a Boeing C-17A Globemaster III, took off from Joint Base Andrews in Maryland on Sunday and later traveled to Riga, Latvia before heading to Moscow.
The last instance of a U.S.-registered plane flying directly from Europe to Russia occurred in January, when special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of former President Donald Trump, met with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss the conflict in Ukraine.
A spokesperson from the Department of Defense stated, “We have nothing to share regarding this incident.” Efforts to get comments from the White House and the U.S. Embassy in Moscow were also reported.
Yury Ushakov, an adviser to Putin, mentioned that following the January meeting, U.S. representatives shared insights and updates regarding discussions between the U.S. and Ukrainian officials. This was part of efforts to clarify future steps that might be taken between the two nations.
Overall, the situation remains unclear, with little information coming from either side about the reasons behind the plane’s landing in Moscow.
