Google Blocks Controversial Dhruv Rathee Video in India

New Delhi: On Tuesday, Google informed the Delhi High Court that it has restricted access to a controversial YouTube video by social media influencer Dhruv Rathee, citing concerns it might offend religious sentiments.

The company stated that this decision was made in response to a directive from the government’s grievance appellate committee. They mentioned that a broader issue regarding global blocking of the video is still awaiting a decision from another court panel.

The petitioner, advocate Amita Sachdeva, argued that Google’s action was only a partial response. She claimed that Rathee’s video, released on March 21, contained “misleading and provocative statements” that insulted Hindu deities, including Lord Ram, Lord Krishna, and Goddess Sita. The video reportedly gained millions of views before its restriction.

Sachdeva pointed out that the committee had ordered Google to remove the video within 24 hours on July 15, but the platform failed to comply completely. Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma noted that the issue regarding a global injunction is still pending and said, “Whatever they could do, they have already done.” The hearing has been postponed to September 3.

This situation highlights ongoing tensions around online content and the balance between freedom of expression and respect for religious sentiments in India.
