Gianni Infantino’s Visit to Colombia: A Snapshot of a FIFA President’s Life

Gianni Infantino recently arrived in Cali, Colombia, where he was warmly welcomed by Ramon Jesurun, the president of the Colombian Football Federation. This visit was significant, not just for a standard meeting, but for the inauguration of Colombia’s new president, Abelardo de la Espriella. Infantino was joined by Alejandro Dominguez, the head of South America’s football governing body, Conmebol, who expressed his support, emphasizing the success of the upcoming 2026 World Cup and standing firm with Infantino.

The role of FIFA president comes with unique responsibilities. Infantino’s job involves forging strong connections with influential figures across the globe, including political leaders. However, his time in office has not been without controversies, notably the failed FIFA Forward plan, which left him under scrutiny. Despite apologizing, Infantino is eager to move past the negative attention and resume standard operations.

Yet, challenges remain. UEFA has threatened to boycott FIFA tournaments, a decision set to be tested soon as the FIFA Under-20 World Cup approaches. Despite these difficulties, Infantino seems determined to persevere, buoyed by support outside Europe.

Traveling the World as FIFA President

Infantino’s travels often resemble those of a head of state. Recently, he arrived at FIFA headquarters in Morocco in a convoy of luxury cars, highlighting the seriousness of a recent board meeting about significant business decisions. His access to private jets, like the one from Qatar Airways, allows him a hectic schedule, including multiple flights in a day to attend various events.

These travels are essential to his role, as he aims to visit FIFA’s member nations and connect with grassroots initiatives. Infantino’s position requires him to step outside Zurich and engage with football officials and politicians in different countries. In fact, when local authorities denied a lavish motorcade for him during a FIFA Congress in Vancouver, it exemplified the exceptional nature of his current role.

Reports indicate that Infantino’s earnings have increased significantly since he took office, reflecting the demands of his high-profile job. As head of the world’s leading sport, many believe a matching salary is justified.

Connections with Global Leaders

Infantino’s connections with prominent figures, including former US President Donald Trump, have drawn mixed reactions. Some in the football community worry that he may be prioritizing personal political interests over his duties to the sport. Incidents, such as a late arrival to a FIFA Congress and actions linked to Trump’s political moves, have fueled concern about his focus on football governance.

Notably, Infantino has rarely addressed the media directly, with just two news conferences over the past four years. This limited interaction allows him to control the narrative surrounding his actions. Recently, he attempted to clarify FIFA’s stance on ticket pricing and entry issues for fans, though some responses raised eyebrows.

A Challenging Future Ahead

As FIFA navigates through various criticisms and the call for change from UEFA and other associations, Infantino’s future remains uncertain. His initiatives, like expanding the World Cup and the expanded Club World Cup, have supporters but also critics who question the financial focus and supporter experience.

Despite the challenges stemming from the failed FIFA Forward initiative and increasing pressure for accountability, Infantino’s recent engagements—like the one in Colombia—indicate he is not backing down. The landscape of football leadership may be shifting, but Infantino appears determined to retain his hold on the role.
