Celebrating Independence

The Cupertino-Bhubaneswar Sister City Initiative will hold a special flag raising ceremony on August 13 to celebrate India’s Independence Day. This yearly event will feature the hoisting of the Indian national flag, cultural performances, and speeches from the Consulate General of India in San Francisco.

Cupertino and Bhubaneswar became sister cities on August 16, 2012. Bhubaneswar, often called the Temple City of India, is located in Odisha and is famous for its rich history, once home to around 7,000 temples. Today, it remains a popular spot for tourists, boasting hundreds of ancient temples.

The ceremony will take place from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Cupertino Community Hall, located at 10300 Torre Ave.

Midpeninsula Elections

The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District is preparing for the November 3 general election, with four board positions up for election, including seats in Wards 1 and 2, which include parts of Cupertino.

Anyone interested in running for a board seat must file their paperwork by 5 p.m. on Friday, August 7. As of July 24, Yoriko Kishimoto is the only candidate who has officially filed for the Ward 2 position, while Ward 1 incumbent Craig Gleason is facing a challenge from Tina To.

If an incumbent does not file by the deadline, the filing period for new candidates may be extended.

Each of the seven board directors serves a four-year term, representing their respective wards within the district. Their responsibilities include guiding the agency’s strategic direction, overseeing policies, budgets, and annual plans. The board meets publicly on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month at 7 p.m.

To be eligible, board candidates must be at least 18 years old, registered to vote, and reside in the ward they wish to represent. They need to gather signatures from 50 registered voters in their ward on a nomination form provided by the Midpen clerk.

For more information on filing or to set up an appointment, contact Midpen’s clerk at 650-691-1200 or via email. More details can also be found on their website.
