India Shines at Commonwealth Games 2026: A Day of Triumph

On July 29, 2026, India experienced a remarkable day in para athletics at the Commonwealth Games. Dilip Mahadu Gavit and Mohammed Basil made history by taking gold and silver in the men’s 100m T47 event.

Stellar Performances in Athletics

Gavit sprinted to victory with a time of 10.71 seconds, breaking the Commonwealth Games record. Basil followed closely, finishing in 10.83 seconds. Their achievements marked a significant moment for India in Glasgow, bringing home the country’s third gold medal of the Games. Earlier, Mirabai Chanu had kicked off the gold-winning streak with her performance in weightlifting, and Sharmila Dhankar also secured a top podium finish in the women’s shot put.

Murali Sreeshankar’s Continued Success

In the men’s long jump, Murali Sreeshankar showcased his talent by winning a silver medal with a jump of 8.09 meters. He initially started strong but was pushed to third place by competitors from Scotland and Jamaica. Sreeshankar’s impressive leap moved him to the top momentarily, but ultimately, Jamaica’s Tajay Gayle took gold with a jump of 8.15 meters.

Boxing’s Golden Day

India’s boxing team excelled as well, with six boxers moving into the semifinals, ensuring the nation will surpass its previous medal tally from the last Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Notable winners included Sakshi Chaudhary, Arundhati Choudhary, and world champion Jaismine Lamboria, who secured her place by defeating England’s Elise Glynn.

With ten guaranteed medals so far, the boxing contingent continues to dominate and has already outperformed its total from the 2022 Games.

Track and Field Highlights

In the 400m hurdles, Yashas Palaksha and Santhosh K Tamilarasan both qualified for the finals. Despite not making direct qualifications, their times were good enough to secure spots based on performance. Animesh Kujur also had a successful day, moving into the semifinals of the men’s 200m.

In shot put, Tajinderpal Singh Toor and Samardeep Singh Gill both advanced to the finals, showcasing India’s growing strength in athletics.

Lawn Bowls Success

The Indian lawn bowls team maintained its winning streak as Navneet Singh and Dinesh Kumar delivered another strong performance, topping Namibia. Nayanmoni Saikia also impressed in the women’s singles with a decisive victory over her opponent.

Heartbreak and Lessons

However, the day wasn’t without disappointments. Athletes like Manpreet Kaur narrowly missed out on medals in shot put, finishing fourth with a throw of 17.49m. In swimming, Suyash Narayan Jadhav and Chaithanya Vishwas Kulkarni also faced tough luck, finishing outside of medal positions in their events.

Conclusion

Despite some close calls, India’s athletes continue to inspire with their hard work and talent, making this Commonwealth Games a memorable chapter in the country’s sporting history. Each achievement, big or small, brings India closer to its athletic dreams at these Games.
