Location: New Delhi – The vibrant area surrounding the historic Jantar Mantar observatory, a well-known spot for rallies and protests, transformed into a lively festival on July 25. Instead of the usual chants for change, Hindi dance music filled the air as crowds danced and cheered joyfully.
Supporters of the youth-led Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) gathered to celebrate a significant achievement after a five-week sit-in protest. The festive atmosphere included jubilant cheers, dancing on a moving tractor, and the sharing of cakes, muffins, and ice cream.
Earlier that day, India’s Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned, meeting one of the main demands of the protesters. This moment turned the unrest into celebration for many who had been advocating for reforms in the education sector.
Following Pradhan’s resignation, the CJP announced the end of their protests, having received promises from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to address further demands. “This is a victory for democracy, for our generation,” remarked Arjun Kumar, a 22-year-old who joined the festivities with friends. “For the first time in years, we’ve held this government accountable.”
Pradhan’s resignation marked a rare moment in Modi’s administration, as he is only the second minister to step down due to a scandal since 2014. The first was M.J. Akbar, who resigned amid serious allegations of harassment in 2018.
As the celebration continued long into the night, Karan Maru, a volunteer from Mumbai, dedicated his time to cleaning up the area left behind by the enthusiastic crowd. “It feels like we are celebrating independence all over again,” said Maru.
The mood at Jantar Mantar starkly contrasted with the previous week, when protests turned violent as police clashed with students trying to march towards Parliament. That unrest only fueled the momentum of the movement, with viral memes boosting the CJP’s popularity online.
Political analysts suggested that the government’s quick response was likely aimed at preserving its reputation ahead of crucial state elections in 2027. Meanwhile, opposition parties, like Congress, welcomed the minister’s resignation, with Rahul Gandhi encouraging students to continue their fight against the government.
In the aftermath, the CJP announced additional successes, including financial aid for families of students who took their own lives due to exam-related stress. They also reported that police complaints against protesters would be withdrawn. “The youth are watching to ensure our demands are met,” said CJP spokesperson Saurav Das.
Attendees expressed hope for a better future. Alok Kumar Gautam, a 19-year-old present at the protest, said, “This victory proves that justice is possible. Corruption will now face consequences.”
Dilpreet Kaur, an air hostess visiting with her brother, celebrated by distributing muffins to commemorate the event and to honor the students who lost their lives. “It’s been wonderful,” she said, wishing for more victories for youth causes.
Along with young people, supporters of various ages gathered to witness history. One attendee from Mumbai, who requested anonymity, flew in to demonstrate his solidarity, stating, “Education is essential to save our country.”
As crowds celebrated, the clean-up began early the next morning, erasing graffiti targeting the government. The stage where CJP leaders had rallied for weeks was dismantled, but the energy surrounding the movement appeared to be growing, raising questions about the party’s future role in politics.
When asked whether the CJP might evolve into a political party, spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka said nothing was off the table, highlighting the group’s desire to continue advocating for youth concerns, notably unemployment.
Payal Khashpariya, a 28-year-old who recently lost her job, noted, “We hope the CJP can bring about positive changes.”
Swarna Bhatnagar, a writer committed to supporting the movement, emphasized that this victory was just the beginning of a long journey ahead. “We’ve much work to do, but today is a reason to celebrate,” she concluded.
CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke stressed that the fight for the future is only just beginning, rallying his supporters with determination. “This is just the start, and we will not stop,” he declared, igniting further cheers from the crowd.
