Inspiring Journey of a Cancer Survivor

In Orange County, Florida, a remarkable story of courage and determination has emerged. Frank Carter, a 67-year-old cancer survivor, recently completed an incredible journey of over 2,000 miles along the Missouri River with his loyal dog, Amos. This adventure came after he received groundbreaking immunotherapy for his cancer.

Carter’s journey lasted 64 days, during which he navigated the longest river in the U.S. in a canoe he built himself. Reports indicate that he began his trip in Montana and ended near St. Louis, facing challenges like severe storms and high winds along the way.

Before his cancer diagnosis, Carter had a passion for adventure. In 2019, he hiked the Appalachian Trail for five months and in 2020, he rode his bicycle across the country from San Diego to New Smyrna Beach, Florida. However, things took a turn in 2021 after a routine 5K race left him feeling unwell.

“I was completely exhausted and not recovering,” Carter shared. After seeing his doctor and undergoing blood tests, he learned he had mantle cell lymphoma, a rare form of blood cancer. He went through 15 rounds of chemotherapy in Orlando.

Despite the treatment’s initial success, lingering traces of cancer pushed Carter to seek care at the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa. There, he underwent CAR T-cell therapy, an innovative treatment that enhances the body’s immune cells to fight cancer more effectively.

“My T-cells were modified to recognize and attack the tumor, allowing them to defeat something that was hiding,” explained Dr. Michael Jain, an oncologist involved in Carter’s treatment. Remarkably, this therapy left Carter cancer-free for four years.

Throughout his medical journey, his dog Amos has been a constant source of support. Carter had adopted Amos right before starting his chemotherapy. “I made a promise to myself that I would overcome this diagnosis. Getting a dog was a part of that plan,” he recalled.

Today, Frank Carter is not just a survivor; he is also a beacon of hope for others. His adventurous spirit and determination shine through, reminding everyone to stay active and hopeful, no matter the challenges they face.
