Measles Cases Rise Again in the U.S.
Measles has become a significant public health concern in the United States in recent years, and the spread of the virus shows no signs of slowing down. A recent report from Johns Hopkins University indicates that there were 2,295 confirmed measles cases in the U.S. as of July 22, exceeding the total of 2,286 cases reported in 2025.
Outbreaks are occurring across various states, particularly in Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Florida, Virginia, Utah, Texas, and Arizona. Texas experienced the largest outbreak in 2025, with 803 cases reported.
According to the latest update from the CDC, there were 34 new outbreaks of measles in 2026, a decrease from 48 outbreaks in 2025. Most of these cases are linked to local outbreaks, while some are associated with international travelers.
Data shows that a staggering 93% of measles patients this year and last year were either unvaccinated or had unknown vaccination statuses. The majority of cases have been among children and young adults aged 5 to 19. Fortunately, there have been no reported deaths from measles in 2026, though three fatalities occurred in 2025.
The rise in measles cases is alarming, especially considering that health agencies declared the disease eliminated in 2000. Measles spreads through direct contact with infectious droplets or through the air when someone breathes, coughs, or sneezes. The virus can remain infectious in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves the area.
Symptoms typically emerge within a week or two and may include high fever, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes. A few days later, flat, red spots can appear, starting on the face and spreading down the body. People are most contagious during the four days before and four days after the rash appears.
Dr. Marc Siegel, a medical expert, highlighted the contagious nature of measles, warning that up to 90% of susceptible individuals exposed to the virus may become infected. He emphasized the need for a 95% vaccination coverage rate to achieve herd immunity.
The CDC strongly recommends that everyone receive two doses of the MMR vaccine, considering it the best defense against measles. Individuals showing symptoms or believing they have been exposed should self-isolate and contact their doctor before visiting medical facilities to avoid spreading the virus.
As the number and length of outbreaks increase, there are concerns that the U.S. could lose its measles elimination status due to sustained local transmission rather than isolated cases related solely to international travel.
