Leh Apex Body Welcomes End of Sonam Wangchuk’s Hunger Strike

SRINAGAR: The Leh Apex Body (LAB) has expressed relief following climate activist Sonam Wangchuk’s decision to end his 26-day hunger strike at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram. LAB representatives were present during this significant moment on Thursday night.

Chering Dorjay Lakrook, co-chairman of LAB, shared their concern, stating, “We had urged him to end his hunger strike because we were worried about his health. We are glad he has decided to stop.”

Wangchuk was joined by LAB members, including Lakrook, when Union ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh visited the hospital. Prior to this, a LAB delegation led by Lakrook had traveled to New Delhi to meet Wangchuk but was delayed in gaining access.

Wangchuk is also a member of the LAB. Earlier this month, the organization had appealed for him to return to Ladakh, emphasizing the importance of his presence as discussions with the government reached a vital point.

On May 22, Wangchuk was part of a Ladakhi team that held discussions with a subcommittee from the Ministry of Home Affairs regarding their demands. However, on July 3, he was unable to attend further talks due to his ongoing hunger strike at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi.

The LAB’s readiness to support Wangchuk during this challenging time highlights the deep concern for both his well-being and the important issues facing Ladakh.
