Farmers Mobilize for Meeting in Delhi
Delhi Police are on high alert as a large number of farmers make their way to the capital for a crucial meeting. This follows a recent protest by the Cockroach Janta Party, which resulted in clashes in central Delhi.
Two groups of farmers, one from Haryana and another from Punjab, are currently heading to Delhi. However, police have stopped the Punjab group at the Shambhu border, enforcing strict measures under Section 163 to control the situation.
What’s Happening?
The farmers plan to participate in a Kisan Mahapanchayat organized by the ‘Desh Bachao Morcha’ on Tuesday at Kisan Ghat in Delhi. The meeting aims to protest against a potential India-US trade deal. Leaders from the farming community have stated there will be attendees from various regions, including Punjab and Haryana.
News reports indicate that over 1,000 farmers from Punjab have gathered at the Shambhu border, where a significant police presence has been deployed. Barricades and cement blocks have been set up to manage the crowd.
Police Restrictions
In light of the farmers’ impending march to Delhi, the Ambala district administration has invoked Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. As a result, gatherings of five or more individuals are prohibited near the Shambhu border.
Authorities have instructed residents and travelers to take alternative routes to avoid disruptions caused by the ongoing protests.
Farmers Remain Determined
Despite the police barriers, farmers are determined to continue their movement. Punjab farmer leader Sarvan Singh Pandher stated that while the borders are sealed, they will not be deterred. He emphasized that their march will proceed as planned, but they intend to wait for dialogue with the authorities rather than attempt to breach the barricades.
Farmers from Haryana Change Tactics
In a separate incident, farmers from various unions in Haryana faced police blockades in Karnal. After initial attempts to march to Delhi were halted, they decided to proceed on foot instead. Sanju Gudiana, a leader from the Bharatiya Kisan Union, mentioned that their resolve remains strong, and they will continue advancing towards the capital even in the face of police resistance.
Accusations Against Haryana’s Leadership
Pandher criticized the Haryana government’s actions, suggesting that they reveal the true nature of Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, who has made promises to the people of Punjab but is now preventing farmers from reaching their destination peacefully.
Detention of Farmer Leader
Additionally, Gurnam Singh Charuni, leader of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Charuni), was detained by police while trying to make his way to the farmers’ assembly. His detainment led to protests at various locations, where farmers expressed their dissent by staging sit-ins along highways.
Traffic Advisory Issued
In light of the upcoming protests, the Delhi Traffic Police have issued advisories urging commuters to avoid key thoroughfares around Kisan Ghat. Traffic diversions are expected, and motorists are encouraged to seek alternate routes to avoid delays.
