PV Sindhu Aims for Title at Japan Open Final
PV Sindhu is set to compete against Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi in the women’s singles final of the Japan Open on Sunday, July 19. This match marks a significant moment for Sindhu, as it is her first BWF World Tour final in two years and her debut at the Japan Open final.
Sindhu earned her spot in the final after a thrilling semi-finals victory over China’s Chen Yufei on Saturday. She won the first game 21-19 before Yufei had to retire in the second game due to a hamstring injury, while Sindhu was ahead 15-10.
The two-time Olympic medalist showcased an impressive performance, breaking a five-match losing streak against Yufei. Earlier in the tournament, she also made headlines by defeating World No. 5, Han Yue.
“I’m really happy to reach the final,” said Sindhu after her match. “Every match has been important for me, especially today’s. I needed to stay focused, especially against top-ranked players. Winning that first game was crucial.”
Sindhu last reached a final at the Syed Modi International in 2024, where she lifted the title. Now, she aims to claim her first BWF World Tour title since then while facing the home favorite and former world champion, Akane Yamaguchi.
