Hussain Calls for Flower to Replace McCullum as England Test Coach

Former England captain Nasser Hussain has recommended that the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) consider appointing Andy Flower as the new Test coach, following Brendon McCullum’s departure. Hussain believes Flower’s careful coaching style could be just what is needed to revitalize the Test team after the end of the Bazball era.

McCullum’s tenure as England Test coach spanned four years but ended on a low note with a disappointing 4-1 defeat in the Ashes series in Australia. While he initially turned the team’s fortunes around—with 11 wins in his first 13 matches—England stumbled towards the end, losing eight of their final 12 matches. This prompted the ECB to look for a new leader.

Hussain feels that Flower, who led England from 2009 to 2014 and achieved significant successes, is the perfect choice to restore the focus and precision that has been lacking recently. Under Flower’s guidance, England won three Ashes series, including a memorable victory in Australia during the 2010-11 season, and reached the number one position in the ICC Test rankings.

“If Rob Key stays, then we need a coach with a sharp eye for detail,” Hussain emphasized in an interview with Sky Sports. “And that person should definitely be Andy Flower. His coaching methods are thorough, and that’s what this current England side needs.”

However, Flower’s return may be complicated since he is currently the head coach for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL and is regarded as one of the most popular coaches in the league.

ECB CEO Richard Gould stated that they have not yet begun speaking to any potential candidates, but Rob Key, the managing director of men’s cricket, will lead the search for McCullum’s successor. “We haven’t reached out to anyone yet,” Gould mentioned, adding that discussions will continue with Rob Key handling the next steps.

Gould also mentioned that the ECB is open to appointing a coach who is involved in franchise cricket, including the IPL. “We need to be progressive and flexible,” he noted.

The ECB plans to start looking for a new Test coach soon, and with Hussain’s support, Andy Flower is already being seen as a top candidate.
