New Delhi: India expressed its pride on Wednesday over the humanitarian help extended to Venezuela after the devastating twin earthquakes on June 24. These earthquakes, with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, claimed more than 2,900 lives and caused significant damage across the country.
Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), shared on social media that it was a privilege for India to support the Venezuelan people through “Operation Amistad.”
In response to the disaster, India launched Operation Amistad and sent an Indian Army team to set up a field hospital in Venezuela, offering much-needed medical care to those affected. According to reports from Venezuela’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, over 1,900 people received treatment at this facility.
The Venezuelan government expressed its gratitude towards the Indian medical team, which included 41 doctors and paramedics who arrived in the country on June 27. A farewell ceremony was held at the ‘Simon Bolivar’ International Airport in La Guaira, where Venezuela’s Vice Minister for International Communication, Rander Pena, thanked both the Indian team and India’s Ambassador to Venezuela, P.K. Ashok Babu.
Yvan Gil, Venezuela’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, also praised the Indian health professionals for their dedicated work at the field hospital, extending wishes of thanks to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the assistance provided.
“On behalf of the Bolivarian Government, I offer our sincere appreciation to the health professionals from India who took care of the Venezuelan people impacted by the earthquakes,” Gil shared on social media. He commended the efforts of the Indian doctors, who handled everything from complicated surgeries to dental care.
Operation Amistad concluded on Monday, marking the end of the field hospital’s services in Venezuela. “The medical team has truly made a difference in the lives of many Venezuelans during their time here,” the Indian Embassy in Venezuela noted on social media.
The MEA highlighted how the Army Field Hospital provided essential medical aid in the wake of this disaster, significantly improving the lives of individuals and families affected.
Many survivors expressed heartfelt thanks to the Indian medical staff for their care and support. Various videos shared on social media showcased the gratitude of the Venezuelan people towards the Indian team for their life-saving assistance.
