London: On Sunday, London embraced the 12th International Day of Yoga with enthusiasm, hosting a special yoga event at Holland Park organized by the High Commission of India.

P Kumaran, India’s High Commissioner to the UK, participated alongside members of the Indian community and local yoga enthusiasts, engaging in asanas and mindfulness exercises in the park.

Despite the heat, hundreds of participants followed the expert guidance on stage, eager to embrace yoga.

“It is wonderful to see yoga gaining popularity worldwide,” Kumaran shared with PTI. “We celebrate International Day of Yoga in various places to encourage its integration into daily life for everyone.”

“Yoga can be adapted to suit all ages and abilities, and we hope people will incorporate it into their lives regularly instead of just once a year,” he added.

As the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) is set to come into effect on July 15, the occasion also reflects the strengthening cultural ties between the two nations. “While the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) is focused on trade, the connections between our peoples are fundamental to our partnership,” he explained.

Holland Park, located in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, is steeped in historical connections with India. Councillor Aarien Areti remarked, “This area has a rich history with India, including notable figures like Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Patel. It is truly a privilege to bring yoga to this park.”

Several well-known organizations such as Heartfulness UK, the Isha Foundation, and others played important roles in the event, promoting yoga and mindfulness practices.

This gathering followed another significant yoga event organized by the mission at the Strand near India House just days before. This year’s theme for the International Day of Yoga is “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” which highlights the benefits of yoga for individuals of all ages.
