Seattle’s Growing AI Scene: Yoodli’s Journey and the New Wave of Startups

At the north end of Seattle’s waterfront, an exciting artificial intelligence startup named Yoodli is making waves. This company, which creates AI-driven speech-coaching software, could have launched from the tech mecca of San Francisco, but founders Varun Puri and Esha Joshi chose Seattle instead. Recently, Yoodli expanded its team, doubling its workforce to around 100 employees.

Yoodli emerged from AI2 Incubator, now known as AI House, which just celebrated its new name after relocating to Pier 70, a historic site that once hosted contestants from MTV’s “The Real World” in 1998. AI House, backed by experienced investors and previous startup founders, focuses on nurturing early-stage companies by providing essential funding and guidance.

In the past year, AI House successfully raised $80 million and has seen a total of $120 million funnel into startups since 2020. Since 2021, Yoodli has benefitted from being part of this supportive environment, now enjoying stunning views of Puget Sound and easy access to the Olympic Sculpture Park.

As the tech landscape continues to evolve in the wake of the pandemic, substantial investments are flowing into AI technologies. While San Francisco may be home to the largest pool of tech talent, Seattle advocates, including those from AI House, are confident in the city’s bright future.

According to Sri Chandrasekar, the newly appointed managing director of AI House, the preference for Seattle over places like San Francisco stems from its rich talent pool and the interest from venture capital firms eager to support inventive startups. Chandrasekar, who relocated from the Bay Area to Seattle in 2021, highlighted that Seattle presents a more favorable competition landscape for innovative ideas.

“It’s like 10,000 firms chasing 1,000 good ideas in the Bay Area,” he explained. “In Seattle, there are about 20 firms chasing the same number of good ideas. This is where investors can thrive.”

Despite some criticism over the city’s tax policies, such as the recently enacted “millionaires tax,” Seattle continues to attract startups like Yoodli. AI House is determined to maintain this momentum—requiring that all funded startups spend at least one month per year in Seattle, working at Pier 70.

Chandrasekar shared his experience, saying, “I’ve been in venture capital for a long time, and I feel like navigating company building is more challenging than ever. Coming to Seattle to learn from other founders is vital.”

The AI talent pool continues to expand, too. Prominent AI firm OpenAI, which moved into a former Microsoft building in downtown Bellevue last year, recently acquired even more space. Another AI competitor, Anthropic, is planning a significant office expansion in Seattle’s South Lake Union.

A recent report from the Puget Sound Business Journal indicates that AI companies are driving much of the region’s office leasing activity, with more than 292,000 square feet snapped up this year and more deals anticipated in the coming months.

Yifan Zhang, managing director at AI House and co-founder of Loftium, believes Seattle is the right choice for Yoodli and other startups. “The Seattle ecosystem delivers real results over hype,” he noted. “When the time comes to build a genuine company, that’s when the incubator and the Seattle community become most invaluable.”
