Amidst Turmoil in Indian Football, AIFF Focuses on a Fresh Identity

Indian Football Faces Uncertain Times Amidst Changes

Indian football is currently experiencing a challenging period, marked by uncertainty and doubts. The national team seems far from qualifying for the FIFA World Cup, and there’s no clear plan in sight to improve the sport. Following a shortened Indian Super League (ISL) season, even the upcoming season’s schedule and structure remain unclear.

In the midst of this confusion, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) took a significant step on June 20 by proposing to change its name. During a Special General Body Meeting in New Delhi, the AIFF voted to rename itself the Football Federation of Bharat (FFB), a decision that now awaits approval from the sports ministry and FIFA.

AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey emphasized that this is just the beginning of a lengthy process that requires multiple approvals. “We will submit this proposal to the sports ministry and hope for their agreement. If they give their nod, we will present it to our general body and then to FIFA. We need to take it step by step,” Chaubey explained.

He referenced other countries, like Turkiye and Czechia, which have updated their football association names to reflect their national identities. However, the timing of this name change proposal raises questions, particularly since the federation still hasn’t clarified the structure of the ISL, which is the country’s main football league.

Upcoming ISL Season Set for September 4

While the AIFF has confirmed that the new ISL season will kick off on September 4, the long-term framework for the league remains unresolved. A managing committee, consisting of club representatives, federation officials, and commercial partners, will determine the details moving forward.

“The clubs have submitted their proposals, and we’ll have discussions to resolve the issues. The managing committee will push things ahead, and then it will go to the executive committee for final approval,” Chaubey stated.

The upcoming season is anticipated to last for seven months and will feature home-and-away matches involving 14 teams. Yet, further significant questions linger.

Broadcast Rights for ISL Remain Uncertain

Earlier this month, the AIFF tentatively agreed to a model that would allow clubs to lead the operation of the ISL for the next two years, following talks with Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya. This plan emerged after Genius Sports, based in London, made a significant bid for the league’s commercial rights.

The bid, valued at Rs 2,129 crore, included provisions for annual increases and a revenue-sharing model that would see the AIFF earn Rs 12.4 crore in the first year. However, club teams pushed back against this plan.

Clubs prefer to take control of the commercial rights for the next two years, offering the AIFF Rs 15.4 crore annually to handle regulatory functions like refereeing, legal oversight, and anti-doping measures. They assured that the AIFF’s role as the governing body would not change, as it would still oversee regulations, transfers, and compliance.

For now, the focus seems to be on the proposed name change, rather than resolving the ongoing structural issues within Indian football.
