EU Tech Commissioner Highlights Economic Opportunities in Europe Amid AI Concerns
Henna Virkkunen, the European Union’s tech commissioner, recently took to social media to emphasize that Europe should be seen as an economic opportunity rather than a security risk. This comes after a national security measure in the U.S. led the San Francisco-based company Anthropic to pause its AI models, Mythos 5 and Fable 5.
The European Commission is currently looking into how this situation will affect users in Europe. They have also expressed that any emergency strategies for managing advanced AI risks should not unfairly target international partners. Virkkunen is advocating for quick approval of new measures designed to reduce the EU’s reliance on technology from outside the bloc. These proposed measures would prioritize European companies for important public cloud and AI contracts. However, these changes will only become law after discussions with the European Parliament and other member states.
According to reports, over 80% of the digital products, services, infrastructure, and intellectual property used in the EU come from companies outside the region.
