India and Slovakia Strengthen Ties with New Agreements

India and Slovakia have taken a significant step in their relationship by forming a comprehensive partnership. On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico met to discuss various areas of collaboration, including defense, labor mobility, digital technologies, and cybersecurity.

This visit marks Modi as the first Indian leader to visit Slovakia since its independence in 1993. He highlighted that this partnership reflects the mutual trust and common goals of both nations, particularly in sectors like automotive, railways, space, advanced manufacturing, and artificial intelligence.

Modi is currently on a week-long trip to Europe, with Slovakia being the second stop. He plans to return to France for the G7 Summit and meet with several world leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump.

During a joint media interaction, Modi expressed his gratitude for Slovakia’s support in finalizing the India-European Union free trade agreement. He stressed the importance of implementing this agreement promptly to maximize benefits for industries and startups in both countries.

Modi also pointed out the opportunity to enhance cooperation in defense, space, and civil nuclear energy. He announced a letter of intent on defense cooperation that will boost joint development and production between both nations’ defense industries.

He noted that Slovakia’s first satellite was launched by India in 2017 and emphasized the need to collaborate further in civil nuclear energy. Additionally, an MoU on labor migration was signed, aimed at improving the mobility of skilled workers, along with an upcoming agreement on social security.

Fico acknowledged a shared vision between the two nations, particularly regarding foreign policy and international law compliance. He expressed support for reforms in the United Nations, endorsing India’s aim for a permanent seat on the Security Council.

Both leaders also welcomed the conclusions of negotiations for a free trade agreement between India and the EU, anticipating benefits for Slovakia’s automobile sector and highlighting the desire for more Indian investments in public-private partnerships.

Other agreements included collaborations on digital technologies, quantum communication, higher education, and research partnerships between Indian and Slovak universities.

Additionally, both sides agreed to set up a joint working group on counter-terrorism, underscoring the importance of global cooperation to combat terrorism effectively. They called for accountability for those involved in terrorist activities.

This strengthened partnership marks an important development for both India and Slovakia, setting the stage for enhanced collaboration across multiple sectors.
