Kentucky’s Emergency Call Centers Set for Major Upgrades

Hopkinsville, KY – All 117 call centers across Kentucky will soon undergo significant upgrades, part of a move towards a modernized emergency system known as Next Generation 911. The Christian County Emergency Communications Center (ECC) is already using some of these advancements to improve daily operations.

Governor Andy Beshear announced this initiative this week, highlighting its goal to enhance the speed, accuracy, and cooperation between different agencies. The upgrades will allow people to contact emergency services through various means, including voice calls, texts, photos, and videos, using any compatible device. Improved mapping technology will help dispatchers locate callers more precisely, and features will be added to assist individuals with hearing and speech impairments.

Currently, 19 call centers in Kentucky have successfully adopted this technology. The full rollout is expected to be completed by the end of 2027. In Christian County, the ECC is equipped with capabilities for voice calls, text-to-911, and video communications for emergencies.

Local municipalities will be in charge of implementing these upgrades. Justin Rios, Public Information Officer for the Hopkinsville Police, emphasized the importance of keeping up with advancements in 911 technology to enhance their systems effectively.

“Many 911 centers in the state face challenges due to limited funding, and some required integrations can be costly,” said Sarah Dragoo, Director of Christian County ECC. “Given the fast pace of technological advancements, it’s crucial for 911 centers to keep up to provide timely assistance to our communities.”

Rios also noted that receiving information in multiple formats allows dispatchers and first responders to gain a clearer picture of emergency situations, boosting efficiency and safety overall.

In addition, Christian County has made a significant investment by funding a backup E911 center at the new Fire Station 5. This facility will enable dispatchers to switch seamlessly to an alternate location in the event of power outages or natural disasters.
