India vs Afghanistan: Rohit Sharma Sharpening Skills in Mohali Nets

Rohit Sharma Shines in India’s Practice Session

On Wednesday, Rohit Sharma stepped into India’s white-ball practice nets, grabbing attention despite the presence of fresh talent. Even before the team bus arrived at IS Bindra Stadium, excitement was in the air, especially around Rohit, who had recently taken a break due to fitness concerns.

There was buzz about his health after recent reports hinted at uncertainty. However, it was confirmed that the seasoned opener received clearance to play. As the Indian squad gathered for practice, all eyes were on him, even with newly-appointed T20 captain Shreyas Iyer and batting sensation Yashasvi Jaiswal in the mix.

While young players like Gurnoor Brar, Prince Yadav, and Harsh Dubey diligently went about their drills, 39-year-old Rohit naturally became the focus of everyone’s attention.

Rohit Takes Center Stage

Rohit’s practice started with a warm-up away from the batting nets. He chatted with strength and conditioning coach Adrian Le Roux before switching to light shuttle runs, with Ishan Kishan joining him. Completing around five sets, he showed no signs of discomfort, easing any concerns about his recent fitness issues.

Once he padded up, the atmosphere changed. For an hour, every move he made was delicate, alternating between facing fast bowlers and spinners. Coaches observed intently, while teammates kept stealing glances. The small crowd present was engrossed in tracking his every stroke and miss.

As expected, his initial attempts to find form looked a bit rocky, typical for someone returning after a break. An early delivery from Nitish Kumar Reddy knocked him over, reminding everyone that even the best need time to settle in.

Yet, as the session progressed, Rohit’s rhythm began to return. He left some deliveries alone and took cautious swings, gradually finding his timing. He focused more on establishing a feel for the game rather than just hitting boundaries.

Soon enough, he showcased glimpses of his signature style. A flick off a delivery from Arshdeep Singh sent the ball soaring over deep mid-wicket, and he cleverly guided a wide yorker to the boundary. Despite a few mishits and deliveries that beat the edge of his bat, his improvement was notable.

When Gurnoor bowled a short delivery, Rohit tried pulling but didn’t connect entirely. However, by the time he moved to face the spinners, his performance was much smoother. He hit a series of straight sixes with apparent ease, recalling the fluidity that has characterized his batting over the years.

As discussions continue around Rohit and the pressure he faces, it’s evident that a player of his caliber has his own standards to meet. With nearly two decades in international cricket, his real challenge is not just outside scrutiny but the expectations he places on himself.

Wednesday’s practice session didn’t reveal all the answers, nor was it meant to. It provided an intriguing glimpse into how a champion works diligently to regain his rhythm.
