Haiti’s 2026 FIFA World Cup Jersey: The Surprising Connection to Poland’s Flag

Haiti Returns to FIFA World Cup After 52 Years

Haiti is set to make a grand return to the FIFA World Cup, marking its first appearance since 1974. In their debut, they faced tough competition, playing against Argentina, Poland, and Italy, and were eliminated in the group stage. Now, the team is back with hopes of leaving a mark on the tournament.

A particularly unique feature of Haiti’s jerseys has caught the attention of fans: the Polish flag, prominently displayed around the waist area. This isn’t just a design oversight; it carries significant historical meaning.

A Historical Connection

The story traces back to 1802, when Haiti was still under French colonial rule, and a fierce fight for freedom was underway. During this period, around 5,000 Polish soldiers, sent by Napoleon, arrived in Saint-Domingue (now Haiti) to help the French suppress a slave revolt. Many of these soldiers were motivated by the hope that their support for France would eventually aid in restoring Poland’s independence, which had been divided among Prussia, Russia, and Austria.

However, upon arrival, the Polish troops realized their role was to help crush a freedom movement led by enslaved Africans. Moved by the Haitian struggle, many soldiers decided to switch allegiances and joined the revolutionaries in their fight for freedom.

Once Haiti achieved independence in 1804, its first leader, Jean-Jacques Dessalines, acknowledged the solidarity shown by the Polish soldiers. Although Haiti’s 1805 Constitution limited citizenship for white foreigners, Dessalines made a notable exception for the Polish, allowing about 500 of them to stay in Haiti and become part of its community.

Fast forward over 220 years, and during Haiti’s return to the World Cup, the Polish flag on their kit serves as a tribute. It honors the Polish soldiers who fought alongside Haitians in their quest for independence and decided to make Haiti their home.

Interestingly, Poland will not be part of this year’s World Cup, having failed to qualify. Haiti will compete in Group C alongside Brazil, Scotland, and Morocco.

As fans eagerly anticipate Haiti’s games, this connection to Poland adds an additional layer of meaning to their World Cup journey.
