Priya Bapat Opens Up about Early Career Challenges
Actor Priya Bapat recently shared a troubling experience from the beginning of her acting career, highlighting issues of personal boundaries. During a discussion about one of her first films, she recounted how a co-star repeatedly overstepped professional limits, leaving her feeling uneasy.
Priya reflected on a particular kissing scene in the movie that raised her concerns right from the script readings. While she was open to the idea of performing the scene, she questioned its significance to the story. “This was one of my first films, before ‘City of Dreams’ took off. I kept asking the director why the kiss was necessary. It felt out of place,” she explained.
Despite her doubts, she eventually agreed to the scene, aiming to push through her own reservations. “If it’s needed for the story, I’m willing. But it felt unnecessary. The director was very persuasive, and I thought it might help me confront my inhibitions,” she noted.
Things took an uncomfortable turn during the shoot when the co-star began to improvise beyond what they had discussed, leading to unwanted advances. “The actor kept kissing me during the scene, and I felt unsure about how to stand up for myself. I didn’t know how to handle the situation,” she admitted.
Priya also revealed that the actor’s behavior extended beyond filming. He frequently contacted her, trying to arrange meetings and meals, despite her clear unwillingness. “We were staying in different rooms at the same hotel, but he kept messaging me, asking to meet. This was completely new to me, and it shouldn’t happen again,” she shared.
While shooting in Bhopal, she spoke to her husband, actor Umesh Kamat, about her discomfort. Concerned for her well-being, Umesh decided to visit her, staying on set for three days to help create a safer environment. “I didn’t ask him to come, but he flew down from Mumbai to support me. His presence helped to make things clearer for the co-star about what was acceptable,” Priya said.
In closing, she mentioned that this experience has been an isolated incident in her career. “So far, this is the only such situation I’ve faced,” she stated. Her revelations have ignited discussions on the need for workplace boundaries and consent within the entertainment industry.
